AI Healthcare company Presagen, in collaboration with Ovation Fertility (USA) and IVF Spain, presented a poster of a recent study of Life Whisperer at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) 2022 Scientific Congress, July 2022.

Life Whisperer uses Artificial Intelligence to assess images of IVF patients’ embryos to evaluate their quality, in order to improve IVF outcomes. Life Whisperer Viability non-invasively assesses how likely embryos are to lead to a pregnancy, and Life Whisperer Genetics non-invasively assesses embryo genetic integrity (euploidy).

It is well known that the quality of embryos declines with age. However, Life Whisperer AI algorithms do not incorporate age as a separate variable, rather they assess the quality of embryos based on morphology alone. This means that the algorithms assess whether the embryos visually appear to be of good quality based on a large dataset of past cases.

This study confirmed that the Life Whisperer AI was able to detect the expected age-related decline in embryo quality using only images. The results suggest that age-related effects on embryo quality are inherently captured in embryo morphology. This means that older IVF patients develop embryos that visually do not look like they are of as high a quality as younger patients.

The study shows that Life Whisperer is generalizable to patients of all ages, and that age is not required to be entered as a separate input for the AI algorithm to work effectively. Importantly, for older IVF patients, Life Whisperer can ensure that the embryo selected is the best quality embryo from the ones that are available, to help improve the relatively low chances of a successful pregnancy.
